Poor but sexy Berlin heads to the polls, parties promise clean streets, syringe-free playgrounds

Berlin, a city often described as "poor but sexy," is gearing up for its state election on Sunday. Polling booths will be flooded by voters hoping to elect a government that can tackle the city's numerous issues, including garbage-strewn streets, syringe-filled playgrounds, and the infamous "forever-building sites."

Campaign promises focus on cleaning up graffiti-covered train stations, fixing buckled cycling lanes, and easing the housing shortage that affects nearly four million residents. However, city officials often struggle to provide reliable services, with the administration notorious for its slow bureaucracy and dysfunctional administration.

Despite its cultural and artistic richness, Berlin's infrastructure has long been marred by complaints of slow bureaucracy and a dysfunctional city administration. The city's debt of 2.2 billion euros forced painful spending cuts, and renovations at the University of Berlin cost 2.4 billion euros due to decades of delayed investment.

Unfazed by these challenges, Berlin still boasts a vibrant start-up scene, hedonistic nightlife, and numerous museums, galleries, zoos, and techno clubs. With four parties leading the race for the Rotes Rathaus, voters will hope to elect a competent government and ensure a smooth voting process, following a messy 2021 election and subsequent unrest.
