Police warn against ‘social media verdicts’ on rape cases

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, has cautioned against people forming judgments on rape allegations based on social media before investigations are completed or cases are decided by courts. Speaking in a statement, Babaseyi emphasized that rape cases are serious and should be handled with care, sensitivity, and thorough investigation.

He stressed that an allegation should not be treated as a conviction and cautioned against treating social media posts as evidence of guilt. Babaseyi highlighted that social media can have positive effects, such as raising awareness and encouraging victims to speak out, but they should not be considered as proof of guilt. He also stressed that the police have a responsibility to establish facts, which is crucial for maintaining the credibility of law enforcement.

Babaseyi urged the public to take allegations seriously without making premature judgments and to focus on truth rather than personal preferences.
