PM Anwar: Madani administration doing its best to meet needs of all races

In an interview with Chennai-based Thanthi TV during a visit to India, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that the current government is making every effort to ensure the needs of all races in Malaysia are heard and addressed. He acknowledged that the race-based policies established in the 1970s were a response to the economic disparity faced by Malays and indigenous communities at the time.

While recognizing the wisdom behind these initial policies, Anwar expressed concerns about the potential for such measures to become "overzealous" and lead to feelings of neglect among certain ethnic groups. Speaking about the current government's approach under the Madani framework, Anwar stated that they are implementing adjustments, particularly for those experiencing poverty or denied opportunities.

This includes providing support to individuals based on race when necessary, such as helping poverty-stricken Malays or indigenous people. Anwar also addressed concerns about Indian students potentially being denied access to education and emphasized the importance of addressing these issues. He acknowledged that such adjustments might not be well-received by everyone, particularly within the Malay community, as changes intended to benefit one group could face opposition from another.

Anwar stressed that the challenge of governing a multiracial and multireligious country lies in engaging with communities respectfully, accepting limitations, and making improvements wherever possible.
