PenCom extends pension verification deadline to December 31

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has extended the deadline for mandatory online verification and enrolment of federal civil servants until December 31, 2026. This extension came after approximately 118,901 eligible workers did not complete the process on time. The exercise, which started in February 2026, was initially set to end on July 31, 2026.

As of July, only 31,099 employees had successfully enrolled, which is about 20.7% of the estimated 150,000 active Federal Government employees entitled to accrued pension rights. PenCom cited low participation and requests from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) for additional time to enrol their workers. The commission stated that this extension would give affected workers the opportunity to establish their pension entitlements before retirement.

The extension was in line with Section 15(1) of the Pension Reform Act 2014, which entitles employees who migrated from the old pension arrangement to the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) to accrued pension rights earned from the date of their first appointment up to June 30, 2004. These rights include pension and gratuity benefits, determined through actuarial valuation.

PenCom emphasized the importance of completing the process to determine the Federal Government’s outstanding pension liabilities and secure the necessary funding from the government before affected workers retire.
