Penang teacher under probe for allegedly assaulting 9-year-old

A teacher at a Chinese vernacular primary school in Penang is under investigation for allegedly assaulting a nine-year-old student, resulting in the boy having bruises on his body. The Penang education director, Dziauddin Mat Saad, announced that the teacher has been temporarily reassigned to the district education office while the investigation takes place.

This transfer is not punitive, but rather to separate the teacher and student and provide an opportunity for counseling. The school management has met with the student's parents to discuss the incident, and the matter has also been reported to the police, who are conducting their own investigation. The Penang Gerakan party had previously called for an investigation after the student reported suffering bruises on his back and arm, allegedly inflicted by his teacher.
