Nyamira orders removal of Eucalyptus trees from water catchment areas

The Nyamira County Government has directed the removal of eucalyptus trees planted near water sources, emphasizing the species' potential to strain critical water supplies. County Executive Committee Member for Environment John Matiangi cautioned against activities that jeopardize the sustainability of springs, wetlands, riverbanks, and other water sources during a Kijauri event for the E-voucher vaccination drive.

Matiangi urged residents to reconsider planting eucalyptus trees close to water sources, noting that their extensive root systems and high water demands could deplete moisture. He urged the community to relocate eucalyptus trees from water catchment areas and plant suitable indigenous species instead. Environmental experts warned that fast-growing tree species planted near springs and wetlands can disrupt the delicate balance of these ecosystems.

The county's initiative aims not only to remove unsuitable trees but also to restore degraded water catchment areas. Matiangi emphasized the importance of planting the right trees in the right locations, urging residents to embrace indigenous tree species that offer benefits without overburdening water resources. He warned against cultivation near springs and riverbanks, stressing that protecting water catchment areas is crucial for the region's long-term water security.
