The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) epidemiologist, Dr Lukman Ademola, has confirmed that no new diphtheria cases have been reported in the territory following the recent outbreak. The FCT Administration had earlier confirmed two deaths and five laboratory-confirmed cases out of 15 investigated. Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary, Health Services and Environmental Secretariat FCTA, disclosed this during a community sensitisation event in Karshi.

Dr Ademola stated that the territory had not established any evidence of secondary infection or community transmission of the disease. Although one or two suspected cases were reported since the increase, laboratory tests and enhanced surveillance did not confirm new cases since the increase was noticed. The FCT has been proactive in its response, maintaining enhanced surveillance to prevent further spread.

Health officials intensified surveillance and active case searches, including house-to-house visits in areas with suspected cases. They are also working with laboratories and sensitizing clinicians to promptly identify, test, and manage suspected cases. The FCT plans to extend its sensitisation campaign to all six area councils.

Residents are advised to seek medical attention promptly upon noticing symptoms such as a persistent cough, sore throat, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, breathing difficulty, and swollen neck with a whitish patch in the throat, known as a pseudomembrane.
