New Zealand To Introduce Short-Term Graduate Work Visa; Eligible International Graduates Can Apply From November 16

In November 2026, New Zealand will launch a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, granting eligible international graduates a six-month stay with unrestricted employment rights as they seek jobs. This visa pathway aims to align graduate opportunities with New Zealand’s skills requirements. The application window opens on November 16, 2026, for international students who have recently completed or are still finishing qualifying studies in New Zealand. They can apply up to three months after their New Zealand student visa ends.

To qualify, applicants must possess a qualification at New Zealand’s Qualifications Framework Level 5-7, completed full-time for a minimum of 24 weeks in New Zealand. The qualification must not be an English language or foundation/bridging program and should not qualify the applicant for a Post-Study Work Visa on its own. They must have at least NZD 5,000 in funds for living expenses, meet health requirements like a valid medical certificate and chest X-ray, and not have previously held a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa or a Post-Study Work Visa.

Graduate work visa holders enjoy unrestricted employment rights under employment or services contracts. However, they cannot own a business, receive family support from the visa, or provide support to their spouses or children. Partners can independently apply for work visas, while dependent children must apply as international students.

An individual can hold only one Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, which cannot be renewed or applied for again in the same category. Students previously holding such a visa must switch to a higher-level qualification program or another student visa, if eligible.
