New York Fashion Week: Coach, Carolina Herrera and Cult Gaia impress amid Cos runway protest controversy

New York Fashion Week, which concludes on Tuesday, is currently making waves globally, but not just for its usual fashion spectaculars. A prominent incident occurred on Sunday when an animal rights protester disrupted the Cos runway and was forcibly removed by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) president, sparking widespread discussion online about appropriate boundaries. Despite this controversy, the week offered a diverse array of standout collections.

Carolina Herrera's creative director, Wes Gordon, paid homage to the brand's 1980s glamour for its 45th anniversary, featuring elegant yellow tulips, polka dots, and fitted silhouettes that cater to the no-nonsense New York lifestyle. Soft, periwinkle blue, pistachio green, and dusty pink pieces added a touch of sophistication to the collection.

Meanwhile, Olivia Cheng's Dauphinette presented a thought-provoking collection titled "Lady Mondegreen," exploring transformation, memory, and the acceptance of imperfection. The 24-look collection incorporated vintage fabrics, hand-beading, and even minaudières made from real bread, delving into the themes of preservation and imperfection.

Christian Cowan's collection drew inspiration from Hollywood glamour, particularly Nathanael West's "The Day of the Locust" and Marilyn Monroe's complex relationship with fame. His theatrical approach included archival textiles from the 1920s and 1950s, as well as corsetry and sculptural taffeta flowers.

Tory Burch took a more optimistic approach, looking to the pleasure of wearing clothes and the desire for clothes that become more interesting with age. Her collection featured deliberately creased fabrics, frayed knitwear, and flapper-inspired dresses, all accompanied by barbed-wire hardware and pleated skirts secured with belts.

The Cos show also drew significant attention due to the incident involving CFDA president Steven Kolb, who violently removed an animal rights protester from the runway. Following the incident, Kolb apologized and announced his voluntary leave of absence to address the situation.

Lastly, Cult Gaia returned to New York Fashion Week with a collection titled "Behesht," meaning heaven in Persian. Designer Jasmin Larian Hekmat used the collection to explore resilience and renewal following the death of her grandmother. The collection progressed from charcoal to sky blue and blooming pinks, featuring architectural basketweaves and hand-painted organza petals, ultimately conveying a message of hope emerging from difficult circumstances.
