NDC Youth Organiser aspirant Odarteifio pledges to tackle Northern Ghana’s irrigation crisis

Steven Nhyira Odarteifio has announced his intention to run for the position of National Youth Organiser in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), with a focus on irrigation development in Northern Ghana. He emphasized that if elected, his primary goal would be to establish a dedicated irrigation fund to enable young farmers in the region to cultivate crops all year round, boost their incomes, and mitigate rural-urban migration.

At a press conference in Accra on September 14, 2026, Odarteifio outlined his vision for leading Ghanaian youth towards economic independence. He highlighted that over 60 years, northern Ghana's farmers have only managed to cultivate crops once a year, forcing many young people to abandon agriculture post-season and migrate to urban centers seeking alternative income sources.

He asserted that this issue must be addressed. Odarteifio believes that expanding irrigation infrastructure could transform farming from a seasonal to a year-round activity, significantly enhancing farmers' earnings. He stressed the need for the Finance Minister to present a concrete plan to resolve the irrigation deficit in the north, as doing so would double the incomes of three to four million young people who currently migrate to urban areas after their main farming season.
