Nana Ayew Afriye sues Rev Owusu Bempah

Member of Parliament Dr Nana Ayew Afriye has brought a lawsuit against Rev Isaac Owusu Bempah, the head of the Glorious Word Power Ministry International, for allegedly making false statements that defamed him. The defamation claims stem from alleged remarks made during a church service around September 6, 2026, where Rev Bempah accused Dr Ayew Afriye and others of planning an attack on the church.

The 11-page legal document seeks GH¢10 million in damages for the alleged defamation. Dr Ayew Afriye specifically names Rev Bempah, former NPP MP Anthony Abayifa Karbo, former GIPC CEO Sammi Awuku and Opare Ansah as individuals named in the alleged plot against the church.

Dr Ayew Afriye vehemently denies the charges, stating he has never conspired with anyone to attack Rev Bempah or his church. He argues the defamatory statements have damaged his reputation as a medical doctor, politician and public figure, causing ridicule and scorn.

In the lawsuit, Dr Ayew Afriye says he previously warned Rev Bempah on social media to retract the allegations or face legal action. The pastor allegedly responded that he was ready to face court if challenged. Dr Ayew Afriye claims the continued dissemination of the defamatory statements has hurt his political standing in the Effiduase-Asokore constituency, causing some potential voters to distance themselves from him.

The MP is asking the court for the full amount of GH¢10 million in damages, an order for the defendants to publicly retract the statements and apologize, a perpetual injunction against similar future statements, and costs including legal fees.
