NAIMOS steps up response to alleged illegal mining in Atewa Forest Reserve

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has stepped up efforts to combat reports of illegal mining activities within the Atewa Range Forest Reserve. In a statement released on Tuesday, September 15, NAIMOS acknowledged recent public and media reports regarding the reserve, as well as concerns raised by A Rocha Ghana and other entities during a joint press conference on Monday, September 14, 2026.

The Secretariat emphasized that safeguarding Ghana's forest reserves, water sources, and ecologically sensitive areas is a top priority in its fight against illegal mining. Consequently, all reports related to the Atewa Range Forest Reserve are being given due attention.

NAIMOS disclosed that reconnaissance operations have already been carried out within the reserve and that collaboration with relevant security and state agencies is underway to take further action. The Secretariat explained that the next phase of its intervention will be driven by verified intelligence and further operational assessments to ensure maximum results.

NAIMOS pledged its commitment to protecting Ghana's natural resources and vowed that concerns over activities in the Atewa Range Forest Reserve would not be ignored.

The Secretariat expressed gratitude to civil society organizations, traditional authorities, communities, and individuals for their vigilance in exposing illegal mining activities. It urged the public to continue providing credible information to bolster the national campaign against illegal mining and safeguard Ghana's natural resources.
