N. Korea's ex-defense official linked to nuclear, missile programs dies

Former North Korean Vice Defense Minister Yun Tong-hyon, a prominent figure in the country's nuclear and missile programs, has passed away, according to state media on Tuesday. Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, expressed his deepest condolences and accompanied Yun's family in laying a wreath to honor his memory the day prior, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Yun played a crucial role in bolstering North Korea's military capabilities through his extensive tenure in the munitions sector. The KCNA highlighted that he diligently worked at a position of responsibility for an extended period, contributing significantly to the enhancement of the military's technological prowess.

As one of the key military figures who accompanied Kim during his inspections of the country's nuclear and missile development programs and military exercises, Yun held a significant position. He was initially appointed deputy director of the Ministry of the People's Armed Forces under Kim's leadership, becoming a frequent presence during the mid-2010s as Kim oversaw multiple launch rocket system and missile tests.

During a speech marking the fifth nuclear test by North Korea in 2016, Yun issued a stern warning about the possibility of preemptive nuclear strikes if the enemy attempted to damage its nation.
