Meta lets Claude and Codex configure WhatsApp Business via MCP

Meta has introduced a new tool that allows AI coding agents, such as Claude and Codex, to configure WhatsApp Business via the Meta Partner Center (MCP). This service aims to simplify the often tedious process of setting up WhatsApp for businesses.

The feature is particularly useful for companies looking to use WhatsApp for customer support, order updates, or promotions. A developer can connect the MCP server to an AI agent, sign in with their Meta account, and specify which businesses the agent should have access to. After providing the phone number and display name, the agent can handle the steps needed to register the number and set up the WhatsApp account.

Meta then sends a one-time verification code via SMS or voice. Once the developer provides this code, the agent can verify and register the number, making it ready for sending messages. The initial setup process involves several steps, including connecting the number, configuring webhooks, and managing message templates.

Once the business is set up, the agent can also help manage message templates, which are crucial for sending automated messages after the initial 24-hour customer service window. These templates can include headers, body copy, footers, and buttons. The agent can also create, update, or delete existing templates and send a test message to ensure everything works as expected.

In addition to setup tasks, the agent can configure webhooks, which are essential for handling incoming messages and events from various systems like CRM or chatbots. The agent can inspect the account, modify configurations, and check for missing payment information needed for charging billable WhatsApp messages.
