Loadshedding Makes Electricity Cheaper: Power Minister

Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari expressed gratitude to citizens for enduring brief nighttime power cuts, stating their cooperation reduced electricity expenses. He revealed the August 2026 Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) decreased to approximately Rs. 1.73 per unit, down from Rs. 2.0851 in the prior month. Leghari highlighted the Power Division's efforts in avoiding an extra burden of over Rs.

10.6 billion for consumers and conserving foreign exchange. He credited the public for aiding the government by tolerating loadshedding during nighttime hours. The minister credited consumers' support in lowering electricity costs amidst rising global fuel prices and tense international energy markets due to Strait of Hormuz tensions.

Around 72 percent of the electricity generated in August originated from local sources like hydropower (38 percent), coal (11 percent), nuclear (10 percent), natural gas (7 percent), wind (6 percent), and solar (1 percent), while the remainder came from imported coal and heavy fuel oil (RLNG). RLNG supply disruptions drove spot cargo prices to $23-$25 per MMBtu, making them unusually costly.

The Power Division collaborated with the Petroleum Division and the National Coordination and Monitoring Committee (NCMC) to secure extra local gas for the power sector.
