The incident involved Awoniyi elbowing Brighton defender Max De Cuyper in the face. The referee confirmed the decision as red card for violent conduct, and VAR upheld the on-field decision.

Crystal Palace defender Axel Disasi was also red-carded during his side's 3-2 defeat to Ipswich Town in the 34th minute. The contact was high on Ipswich forward Jack Clarke's shin, and VAR confirmed the decision of red card for serious foul play. Additionally, the Premier League explained two penalty decisions from Arsenal's 2-0 victory over Sunderland on Saturday.

Arsenal defender Ezri Konsa pulled Sunderland defender Dan Ballard's shirt inside the area, resulting in a penalty awarded by VAR. Later, Bukayo Saka was challenged by Sunderland defender Reinildo Mandava, leading to a second yellow card and a penalty for Arsenal.
