Lampang singer faces legal action over ex-abbot scandal parody

A singer in Lampang, Thailand is currently facing legal action after performing a parody of a recent ex-abbot scandal on stage. Dressed in clothing resembling Buddhist monk robes, the singer's performance drew criticism from Buddhists and residents of Lampang who deemed it inappropriate and disrespectful to religion. The incident took place at a well-known entertainment venue in the Mueang Lampang district, which officials claim resembled the "Sami Chot" scandal.

The Lampang Provincial Office of Buddhism director submitted footage of the performance to the Mueang Lampang Police Station to initiate an investigation.

According to the Criminal Code, the singer's conduct may violate Section 206, which is related to acts considered insulting to religion. If found guilty, the singer could face a sentence ranging from one to seven years in prison, a fine between 20,000 and 140,000 baht, or both. Additionally, Section 208 could apply if the singer was found to be improperly wearing clothing or using symbols suggesting they are a monk, novice, ascetic, or religious cleric, with a potential penalty of up to one year in prison and a fine of up to 20,000 baht.

The venue where the performance took place has also come under scrutiny. Mueang Lampang district officials and police inspected the establishment, arguing that the performance might fall under laws governing obscene or indecent entertainment. For such violations, the venue's owner, operator, or license holder can face up to three years in prison, a fine of up to 60,000 baht, or both, and the venue's license could be suspended or revoked.

Furthermore, the matter has been reported to the Lampang governor, who has instructed authorities to fully investigate the case.
