KL police propose KK Mart stores as safety points to boost crime prevention

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 — The Kuala Lumpur Police have suggested transforming KK Mart convenience stores into designated safety points, or Go-To-Safety-Point (GTSP) locations, in a joint effort to enhance crime monitoring and prevention in the capital. The proposal comes from the police's chief, Datuk Fadil Marsus, who revealed that they have identified approximately 700 KK Mart branches in the city and Selangor that are operational round-the-clock, feature well-lit environments, and boast centralized closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems.

These factors make the stores potential safe havens for the public during emergencies. Speaking at the press conference for the opening of a new KK Mart branch at the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent headquarters, Fadil expressed his optimism about the initiative. He emphasized that the collaboration would also involve increased patrolling and monitoring to ensure these locations remain secure for the public.

Datuk Seri Dr Chai Kee Kan, founder and executive chairman of KK Supermart & Superstore Sdn Bhd, was present at the event and welcomed the idea. Chai noted that there are around 1,100 KK Mart branches nationwide, and he believes there is significant potential in placing these stores in government buildings. Additionally, Chai expressed willingness to share CCTV footage from the convenience store chain to support the investigation efforts of the Royal Malaysia Police.
