Kenya Forex Reserves Rise to $15.25 Billion After Three-Week Decline

Kenya's foreign exchange reserves climbed by approximately $370 million to $15.25 billion on September 10, ending a three-week decline, according to data from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK). This reversal brings the reserves to 6.3 months of import cover, up from 6.1 months the week prior. The current level remains well above the CBK's minimum requirement of four months of import cover, providing a financial cushion to meet the country's external payment obligations and maintain stability in the forex market.

The increase reflects a recovery in Kenya's external liquidity position following three weeks of consecutive declines. While the reserves are still below the record $15.4 billion attained in late July, when funds from Safaricom's partial divestment of its stake in telecommunications bolstered the country's reserves, they are now just about $150 million shy of the earlier high.

The improvement in reserves follows a relatively stable trading pattern for the Kenyan shilling against the US dollar, with the currency averaging 129.44 per dollar during the week, a slight improvement from the previous week's 129.47. This stability in the local currency, despite regional and domestic influences, underscores the importance of adequate foreign currency reserves for Kenya's import needs and external obligations.

Given Kenya's heavy reliance on imports for various goods, maintaining sufficient reserves is crucial to ensure that importers can access foreign currency when necessary.
