Kennedy Center board votes to close over financial woes, Trump branding dispute

The Kennedy Center's board met on Tuesday to decide on closing the renowned performing arts venue due to financial struggles and a disagreement over the addition of President Donald Trump's name to the iconic facility. Trump, along with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, attended the board meeting, though they spoke anonymously as they were not permitted to discuss the private gathering. Lutnick's wife, Allison, is a member of the Trump-appointed board.

Just before the board's vote, a federal judge blocked the Kennedy Center board from placing Trump's name on the structure or grounds, citing a previous ruling that the name had been illegally added. Judge Christopher Cooper stated, "Simply put, Defendants cannot install memorials for President Trump or anyone or anything else at the Kennedy Center without Congress's blessing."

Following the addition of Trump's name to the Kennedy Center, the judge ruled in May that only Congress could approve changes to the center's name. The board retaliated by erecting a tarp that obscured Trump's name and a significant portion of Kennedy's. The board had previously discussed multiple options for incorporating Trump's name into the Kennedy Center's grounds, such as inscriptions like "Renovation and endowment overseen by President Donald J. Trump and the Trump Kennedy Center Fund" or "With Gratitude for Support from President Donald J. Trump and the Trump Kennedy Center Fund."

The board emphasized that without this acknowledgment, it was unlikely that Trump would financially support the necessary renovations.

In a hearing on Tuesday morning, prior to the release of the judge's ruling and the board's vote, Judge Cooper urged both sides to seek a mediated solution regarding the fate of the performing arts center. Cooper expressed his frustration, saying, "The government plays word games." He called upon lawyers from both sides to find a compromise, noting the larger public interest in the matter. However, Cooper's appeal for common ground was largely overshadowed by the board's vote shortly after.
