Kempower and EVlution Charge advance port terminal electrification in Canada at Global Container Terminals in Port of Vancouver

Kempower and EVlution Charge, a Canadian charging infrastructure provider, have announced the deployment of DC fast-charging stations at Global Container Terminals (GCT) in Vancouver, one of Canada’s largest ports. The installation aims to support the electrification of GCT’s service vehicle fleet and daily terminal operations.

GCT conducted a technical and operational assessment before selecting Kempower for its charging density, reliability, and flexibility. The system allows opportunity charging during shift changes and breaks, enhancing equipment availability while minimizing operational disruption. Kyron Harvett, Manager of Operations Technology at GCT, highlighted the system's capability through a successful trial of heavy-duty battery-electric terminal tractors, operating around the clock over multiple days using opportunity charging alone.

Kempower’s modular and distributed charging technology boasts built-in redundancy to maximize uptime and maintain vehicle movement for daily operations. Its flexible design accommodates existing port operations, ensuring productive fleets without disrupting day-to-day activities. George Ivanchikov, President and Co-Founder of EVlution Charge, pointed out that GCT has one accountable team maintaining the 42 charging plugs throughout the shift.

Kempower North America President Monil Malhotra emphasized that GCT’s Vancouver deployment showcases how Kempower’s flexible charging systems can cater to diverse port operations, allowing shared charging infrastructure to serve container-handling equipment and large service vehicle fleets. The site features 21 dual-plug Kempower Satellites, offering 42 fast-charging plugs and 2.05 megawatts of available charging power.

The chargers are now operational, supporting GCT’s electric service vehicles as part of the terminal’s sustainability efforts to reduce emissions by 45% by 2030.

The deployment expands Kempower’s portfolio of terminal and port operations worldwide. With more terminals and ports investing in electrification, Kempower is poised to deliver reliable technology to support operational and sustainability goals.
