India Passenger Vehicle Exports Fall 17% In August Despite Record Domestic Sales Growth

India's passenger vehicle industry saw a stark contrast between domestic sales and exports in August. Record-high local dispatches were offset by a 17% year-on-year drop in passenger vehicle exports, totaling 68,230 units. This decline was primarily due to a staggering 51.5% decrease in passenger car exports, which plummeted to 21,181 units.

However, utility vehicle exports saw a positive growth of 23.7%, reaching 46,400 units. Conversely, van exports decreased by 39.6%, dropping to 649 units. The surge in domestic sales was driven by improving demand conditions, with domestic passenger vehicle dispatches soaring 36.5% to 439,309 units, marking a new record. Automakers increased production ahead of the festive season, and overall PV output rose 25.7% to 454,266 units.

Utility vehicle production saw a significant increase of 28.3%, while passenger car manufacturing grew by 22.1%. Despite the drop in exports, the sector maintained momentum, with strong consumer confidence, resilient rural demand, and better financing availability contributing to the growth. Two-wheeler exports increased by 28.5% to 555,292 units, while domestic two-wheeler sales rose by 10.5% to 2.03 million units.

Three-wheeler exports also saw a rise of 31.3% to 56,166 units, with domestic sales increasing by 22.8% to 93,764 units.
