HYROX apologises after Aussie athlete soils herself mid-race

HYROX, a fitness event that combines running with various workout challenges, has faced criticism after an athlete experienced sudden faecal incontinence during a Beijing competition. The mishap, which involved Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzyk, was broadcast widely on Chinese social media, sparking outrage and questions about the event's health and safety standards.

Moritz Fürste, a co-founder of HYROX, apologized for the incident, admitting that the organization should have intervened immediately. He stated that new rules governing such situations are being developed to prevent similar occurrences. Prior to these changes, participants were penalized for actions such as spitting or clearing their nostrils, leading to criticism of potential double standards.

The HYROX World issued a statement acknowledging that the organization's protocols for elite and mass participation competitions had become blurred, leading to confusion in applying and understanding the rules. HYROX China confirmed that the competition area was cleaned and the venue's floor replaced to protect future athletes.

Wietrzyk, an elite HYROX competitor, was invited to take part in the Beijing event. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has reached out to HYROX for further comment. The event, held in indoor venues, follows a consistent race format that allows athletes from around the world to compete against each other.
