How TRAFFITECH-GH will detect traffic offences, issue fines and penalise defaulters

The Ghana Police Service has unveiled a comprehensive plan for its automated traffic enforcement system, TRAFFITECH-GH, set to launch on October 1, 2026. This initiative, under the theme "Police Invisible Eyes Are Watching," aims to leverage technology to detect traffic violations and issue fines, reducing the need for constant presence of police officers at every location.

The system will rely on fixed, mobile, and in-vehicle cameras, sensors, and laser speed-measurement devices to identify traffic offenses such as speeding, running red lights, driving with expired licenses, and more. Once an offense is validated, an Electronic Notice of Violation (ENV) will be sent to the registered vehicle owner via SMS, detailing the location, date, time, and description of the violation, as well as the amount to be paid and the payment deadline.

Motorists have 14 days to either pay the fine or contest the notice online. The SMS will include a ticket number and other pertinent details. Payment can be made through mobile money services, debit or credit cards, or by dialing *222# and selecting option 6. Failure to pay or contest within the 14-day window will result in additional penalties.

Motorists disputing an ENV must first initiate the process online, select a regional police station and a date for a hearing, and the MTTD will confirm the appointment via SMS.
