How Jon Voight Convinced Trump to Support a Federal Film Tax Incentive: ‘This Isn’t About a Handout to Hollywood’

Jon Voight, alongside production partners Steven Paul and Scott Karol, played a pivotal role in convincing then-President Donald Trump to support a federal tax incentive for film production in the United States. The catalyst for this change began with a conversation between Voight and a producer, who lamented that making films in Hollywood was no longer viable due to the lack of production incentives.

Voight reported to reporters that President Trump, appreciating the unanimous support from unions, Congressional members across both sides of the aisle, took the matter seriously. Voight was appointed as the "Special Ambassador to Hollywood" by Trump, which facilitated ongoing engagements with the White House to discuss ways to aid the American entertainment industry.

Initially, Trump's proposal involved imposing tariffs on productions filmed outside the US but after a visit by Voight, Paul, and Karol, President Trump endorsed a federal tax incentive. This decision stemmed from new study findings commissioned by the Motion Picture Association, which indicated that such an incentive could more than double annual production spending to $36 billion by 2035, in comparison to $16.7 billion without the incentive.

Karol emphasized that this initiative was not a 'handout to Hollywood' but a matter of bringing jobs back to America. He shared a story about a crucial American movie that could not be produced due to overseas incentives, which had an impact on Trump's decision. The three plan to introduce legislation in the House Ways & Means Committee, with several key figures from both Democratic and Republican parties ready to champion the cause.
