Her husband went to jail for her murder. Now, Bihar woman found alive in Jharkhand

In 2014, police were called to identify a woman's body recovered from a canal in Bihar's Rohtas district. The body was identified as that of the victim's sister, Shakuntala Devi, who had been missing for some time. Shakuntala had alleged that her in-laws were harassing her over dowry demands. Following her brother's complaint, a murder investigation was launched and Shakuntala's husband, Arun Mehta, was arrested and imprisoned along with other family members.

The case was eventually settled through a compromise where Shakuntala's family received Rs 8 lakh and Shakuntala's ancestral land was sold. Shakuntala was believed to have died. However, a year later, Arun Mehta learned that his daughter-in-law had been spotted in Jharkhand. The family informed the Rohtas Superintendent of Police who ordered an inquiry.

The woman was traced to Labhari village in Jharkhand's Garhwa district and identified as Shakuntala Devi, now living under the name Kanti Devi. She was brought back to Rohtas and presented in court. Shakuntala's disappearance had initially been treated as a murder case. The case has now been reopened and Shakuntala herself is being investigated for fraud and criminal conspiracy.
