Health Ministry activates El Niño preparedness ahead of October rains

The Ministry of Health in Ghana has secured a new pathway for qualified Ghanaian nurses to find employment in the United States, according to an agreement with the City of Columbus, Ohio. This initiative, announced on September 15 by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, follows months of discussions with US counterparts. It aims to create ethical recruitment and deployment opportunities for Ghanaian health professionals, especially nurses.

The minister emphasized that the initiative would extend beyond sending nurses abroad, ensuring their rights, welfare, and professional interests are safeguarded throughout the process. The partnership aligns with Ghana's Migration Policy, international best practices, and global standards on health professionals' recruitment. It also seeks to facilitate skills transfer and broader collaboration between health professionals and institutions in both countries, building on the existing Sister-City relationship between Accra and Columbus, and the Ghana Labour Exchange Programme.

The agreement, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed on September 14, 2026, was facilitated by Buckeye Africa Exchange, StrideHx, and Columbus Sister Cities International.
