HCL Tech leads IT stocks rally, AI sector repricing triggers relief move in Indian IT

On Tuesday, the Nifty IT index rose by over 5% in early trading, reaching 30,435 from the previous close of 28,921.50, according to the source e1b58cf9-3f0. Throughout the day, the index traded at a low of 29,800.85, still up by 3%. Prominent IT companies such as HCL Technologies, Tata Consultancy Services, Mahindra Parthasarathi, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, L&T Technology Services, and Wipro were among the top gainers, surging by up to 7%.

All of these companies, except Coforge, traded in positive territory. Vinit Bolinjkar, Head of Research at Ventura, suggested that the IT sector is undergoing a phase of recalibration rather than a decline, as the global technology spending base remains stable, but the focus has shifted towards AI infrastructure. Three factors are converging to drive this change: safety-focused discussions among key AI developers, tighter scrutiny of capital expenditure returns, and valuations that already factor in a cautious outlook on AI adoption.

Bolinjkar believes that this situation marks the end of generic sectoral rallies for IT stocks. Arun Kailasan, a Research Analyst at Geojit Investments, pointed out that investors are reassessing the pace of AI-led disruption following remarks from executives of leading AI companies advocating for a more regulated approach. These remarks have eased fears of sudden displacement of traditional IT services models and have given domestic firms more time to upskill, change business models, and capitalize on AI-linked opportunities.

Factors such as optimizing sentiment, realistic valuations, and currency depreciation, which boosts realizations and margins on dollar-denominated earnings, have led to fresh buying of leading IT firms.
