Having a male heir not my priority, says Dangote

In a recent interview with ARISE News, Aliko Dangote, the Chairman of the Dangote Group, expressed that having a male heir to inherit his business empire is not a priority for him. Instead, he emphasized the capabilities of his three daughters, Halima, Fatima, and Mariya, who already hold senior positions within the conglomerate.

Dangote stated, "I think, yes, I can see one of them," when asked if he could see one of his daughters taking charge of the group. He added, "I’ve been watching all of them, so I can definitely see one of the three that can actually lead."

Dangote's daughters are highly educated and interested in the family business, with their involvement based on personal interest rather than pressure from him. He believes that they could surpass his achievements and take the company to a higher level due to their education and creativity. When asked if he still hopes to have a son, Dangote clarified that it was not a priority for him, stating, "That one, I think, you know, it’s not my priority."

He emphasized that having a male heir did not guarantee the preservation of a family legacy, adding, "God controls everything. And for me, really, sometimes, yeah, you can pray for God to give you a son, but that son might be the one that would tear down the name of the family. So sometimes when God doesn’t give you something, don’t push."

Dangote's broader succession plan focuses on ensuring that the company is professionally managed and governed, citing global examples like Microsoft and Apple as evidence that businesses can thrive beyond their founders. He aims to make it difficult for any family member to destroy the company's progress and leaves a legacy of contributing to the industrialization of Africa.
