Hamzah’s absence from Umno assembly signals limited Malay pact, say analysts

Opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin failed to attend the recent Umno general assembly, prompting speculation about the extent of the party's emerging Malay pact, analysts said. The assembly featured several prominent PAS leaders, while Umno's recent collaboration in the Negeri Sembilan state election also included Wawasan, a component of Perikatan Nasional.

Analysts argue that Wawasan's absence from the assembly highlights its limited role in bridging the gap between BN, Umno, and PN, as it primarily aims to serve as a liaison between Umno and PAS, given PAS's dominant influence in PN. Political analysts suggest Umno may prioritize direct ties with PAS, given the historical connection through Muafakat Nasional, while Wawasan represents a separate approach.

The proposal for Hamzah to be considered a prime ministerial candidate after the 2016 elections might have further unsettled Umno, as the relationship between Wawasan and Umno remains strained. Analysts believe that Umno might be more receptive to PAS as a political ally, given their shared Malay-Muslim narrative, while the presence of Wawasan and Hamzah carries its own sensitivities due to their complex history with Umno.
