HA calls for early flu vaccination amid infection rise

The Hospital Authority (HA) has expressed concern over a significant increase in seasonal flu infections and serious cases in Hong Kong. The virus is actively spreading within the community. The HA will commence its Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Programmes from Thursday, offering jabs to eligible patients who frequently visit public hospitals and outpatient clinics.

At a press conference, associate consultant Chan Ting-bong from the New Territories East Cluster's department of family medicine urged the public to get vaccinated as soon as possible. He pointed out that viral activity could potentially be higher during the winter months. Chan emphasized that after receiving the vaccine, the body needs approximately two weeks to produce adequate antibodies, which can remain effective for up to six months.

He advised those vaccinated in September and October to give their bodies sufficient time to develop antibodies, ensuring they have immunity during the Christmas and New Year period, a time marked by increased travel and gatherings. Chan also encouraged pregnant women to receive the vaccination promptly. He explained that the vaccine can protect both the health of the mother and the well-being of their unborn child.
