Guwahati Beheading: How Accused Ramanuj Goswami's Custodial Death Has Ignited Debate On Cops, Parents And Marriage

On September 3, 2026, the city of Guwahati was stunned by the gruesome murder of 25-year-old Riya Talukdar Goswami in her Basisthapur residence. Her severed head was found in a refrigerator inside her home, with her body discovered nearby. Her husband, 28-year-old Ramanuj Goswami, was arrested as the primary suspect on September 6.

However, tragedy struck again on September 15, when Ramanuj died in police custody. Deputy Commissioner of Police Tabu Ram Pegu revealed that Ramanuj complained of feeling unwell and was taken for a medical examination. After a flat tyre on his vehicle, he allegedly kicked a constable and jumped from the moving vehicle, sustaining serious injuries before succumbing to his wounds at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital at 3:41 am.

The official cause of death remains under investigation. The incident has ignited a fierce debate on police conduct, parental responsibility, and the role of marriage in society.
