Gov’t to unveil 1.5GW renewable energy pipeline to cut power costs for industries

The Government of Ghana is set to announce a 1.5GW renewable energy pipeline aimed at reducing the high electricity costs faced by industries. Deputy Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Sampson Ahi, unveiled the initiative at the 2026 AGI Ghana Industrial Summit and Exhibition. The pipeline is designed to deliver a more stable and affordable power supply for manufacturers, agro-processors, and other energy-intensive sectors.

Ahi explained that the 1.5GW renewable energy pipeline would provide a reliable electricity source, helping businesses decrease their dependence on costly traditional power sources. This move is part of the government's broader strategy to create a conducive environment for businesses to invest confidently, produce competitively, and generate employment opportunities.

The Deputy Minister also highlighted the government's 24-hour economy initiative, which includes the establishment of a dedicated authority, fiscal incentives, tax relief, and duty-free machinery imports for enterprises involved in processing, manufacturing, and value addition. This initiative is expected to create around 1.7 million jobs across four years through continuous production, logistics, and services.

Ahi emphasized the importance of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Ghana's industrial transformation, noting that they represent about 85% of manufacturing employment and 70% of the country's Gross Domestic Product. Government support for MSMEs includes export development programs, performance-based tax rebates, FASTA certification, concessional export financing, and digital infrastructure.

Ahi called for increased efforts to scale up Ghanaian production in sectors such as cocoa paste, processed milk, garments, and light manufacturing, highlighting that the country possesses the talent, capacity, and competitive potential to succeed in global markets. The Deputy Minister reiterated the government's commitment to working with businesses to implement policies that foster investment, innovation, production, and job creation.

The 2026 AGI Ghana Industrial Summit and Exhibition aimed to strengthen collaboration between government and the private sector to accelerate Ghana's industrial development.
