General Staff: Russia has lost 1,510,000 troops in Ukraine since Feb. 24, 2022

The General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces reported on September 15 that Russia has suffered approximately 1,510,000 casualties since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. This includes 1,400 Russian fatalities from the previous day. The report also detailed Russia's substantial material losses in the conflict, with figures for tanks, armored combat vehicles, vehicles and fuel tanks, artillery systems, launch rocket systems, air defense systems, aircraft, helicopters, unmanned ground systems, aerial drones, naval vessels, and submarines.

Ukraine has not disclosed its own losses during the conflict due to operational secrecy. However, independent Western analyses, including a January 2026 report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), suggest that the ratio of Russian to Ukrainian casualties is roughly 2.5 to 1 or 2 to 1. The CSIS report estimated that Ukraine has likely incurred between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with 100,000 to 140,000 of those being killed in action (KIA).

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine told France TV on February 4 that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in action since the start of the full-scale war, and many more are missing in action (MIAs). The ongoing Russian drone attacks and heavy fighting have made it extremely challenging for Ukraine to recover and identify the bodies of fallen soldiers, a crucial step for DNA confirmation.
