Future Fuels, Real Results: AAL Improves Fleet Efficiency by 19% as Maritime Regulations Tighten

AAL Shipping has seen a 19% boost in its fleet's energy efficiency, marking a significant step in addressing maritime regulations. The Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) rose from 17.80 in 2023 to 14.40 in 2025, signifying reduced carbon dioxide emissions for each ton of cargo moved per nautical mile. This progress underscores AAL's capability to manage fleet expansion and increased cargo loads efficiently, all while cutting emissions.

AAL's findings are published in its 2025 Sustainability Report, coinciding with the maritime sector's transition under stricter environmental rules like FuelEU Maritime, the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), and the proposed IMO Net-Zero Framework. This Framework is designed to steer shipping towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, via a global fuel standard and a pricing scheme for emissions.

Markus Remmers, Global Head of Operations at AAL, views the upcoming IMO Net-Zero Framework as a positive move for the environment and a key catalyst for the industry's journey to net-zero emissions. The Super B-Class fleet, launched in 2024, played a crucial role, boasting capacities of over 90,000 FRT and lifting up to 800 tonnes, while achieving the best energy-efficiency metrics among the fleet.

These vessels averaged EEOI of 4.27 in 2024 and 4.99 in 2025, maintaining the heavy lifting power and operational flexibility vital for customers. Enhancing efficiency further, AAL is leveraging voyage optimization, advanced vessel tracking, and digital tools for better fuel efficiency and data-driven choices. Yahaya Sanusi, Deputy Head of Engineering at AAL, noted that customers desire logistics partners that aid in project execution and sustainability.

By developing more efficient vessels and smarter operations, AAL provides tangible benefits now and prepares for the next phase of the industry's low-carbon shift. AAL's environmental record is spotless between 2023 and 2025, highlighting strong environmental management systems, controlled procedures, and crew training. As regulations evolve, AAL aims to balance environmental performance with the operational needs of moving large and complex cargoes, ensuring customers receive efficient, dependable, and future-ready logistics solutions.
