Food prices remain largely stable as fuel costs rise, climate risks mount – AGRA

In August 2026, food prices in Ghana remained relatively stable according to the latest Food Security Monitor report by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). Fuel costs and climate risks, however, could pose challenges to food security in the coming months. Rice prices stayed the same at GHS 11,100 per metric tonne, while sorghum and white maize saw slight increases.

Meanwhile, the cost of fuel rose, with petrol and diesel prices climbing by 3% and 1% respectively, pushing them 29% and 19% above March levels. AGRA warns that food production risks extend beyond Ghana to other parts of Africa, particularly in West and Central Africa where variable rainfall and fragile agricultural conditions are threatening crop performance.

The report also notes elevated fertilizer prices in some East and Southern African countries, though Ghana, Zambia and Nigeria have seen some relief. Globally, food and agricultural prices rose in August due to tight supplies, strong demand, weather issues and trade disruptions. AGRA emphasizes the looming threat of climate-related shocks, including a strong El Niño event developing in the Pacific which could significantly impact food production across Africa.
