Five larger oil slicks in Hormuz

Satellite images have revealed five larger oil slicks in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Greenpeace. The pollution has extended to the Iranian coast near Qeshm Island's protected areas, as reported by Greenpeace Germany. Qeshm Island is renowned for its extensive mangrove forests and serves as a crucial bird resting area. One of the oil slicks is also apparent on the Omani side of the Strait of Hormuz.

The island's rugged coastline is recognized as a vital habitat for birds. Further oil slicks in the region might be attributed to the Riesco tanker. Greenpeace suggests that the vessel may have sunk and is still leaking oil, though this remains a mere possibility. The US military announced last week that it had targeted the Riesco and other Iranian-linked tankers. Iran has also frequently attacked vessels in the area.
