Ex-investigators have 'every reason to believe’ chemical weapons used in Sudan

Former UN inspectors have stated that there is "every reason to believe" that chemical weapons have been used in Sudan, according to Mark Albon, former head of the UN-Organisation for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons Joint Investigative Mechanism in Syria. Albon called for an international investigation after an alleged chlorine attack at an oil refinery north of Khartoum in September 2024.

This incident provided investigators with a strong circumstantial case that a chemical weapon had been used, though the specific type of chemical used remains unclear due to the lack of access to the site and the passage of time. Albon emphasized the importance of an international investigation to uphold the Chemical Weapons Convention and prevent potential "copycat" attacks in other conflicts, as the methodology for creating such weapons is now relatively well-known.
