England mentor Kevin Pietersen asked to 'challenge' coach Brendon McCullum

England’s white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum has tasked his new mentor, Kevin Pietersen, with challenging the team’s current setup and proposing new ideas to enhance their performance. Pietersen, who was appointed last week to support England through their upcoming T20 series against Sri Lanka and the following one-day international World Cup, has already made a strong impression with his energy and passion.

According to McCullum, Pietersen's expertise as a former player has made him an inspiring figure for many players who once admired him.

Rather than focusing on a single aspect of the team’s performance, McCullum encouraged Pietersen to take a broader perspective and question the existing methods. McCullum expressed his desire for Pietersen to privately challenge him on potential improvements or alternative approaches. This approach comes after McCullum's dismissal as England's Test coach in July, following controversies involving several players, notably Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, and Gus Atkinson.

Fast bowler Brydon Carse was also omitted from England's Test squad for their recent series win over Pakistan due to an incident outside a nightclub.

McCullum emphasized that players must adhere to professional standards to remain in the team. He stressed that there is ample talent available, and those who fail to meet these standards may not have future opportunities. Regarding Brydon Carse, McCullum urged him to resolve his personal issues, acknowledging his cricketing abilities when he played for England. England will face Sri Lanka in a three-match T20 series commencing later on Tuesday, followed by three ODIs.
