Einride and Lidl deploy Germany’s first driverless cab-less truck on public roads

Cab-less trucking company Einride and German food retailer Lidl have launched the world's first driverless, SAE Level 4 autonomous truck on German public roads. SAE Level 4 autonomy means the truck can operate without human intervention within specific conditions like routes and weather. Unlike lower levels of automation, the vehicle doesn't need a human to take over in case of an issue; it handles the driving task itself within its approved domain.

The autonomous truck begins its journey between a Lidl warehouse and distribution center, and finally to a Lidl store, all while no driver or safety operator is on board. This marks the first permit of its kind granted in Germany by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). Germany, being Europe's largest road transport market, has stringent road safety regulations.

The permit is a result of extensive safety validation testing with the KBA, confirming the technology's reliability and safety in real-world conditions. For Einride and Lidl, this represents a step towards making cutting-edge technology more accessible in everyday retail. Roozbeh Charli, CEO of Einride, expressed excitement about bringing this technology to Germany's largest road transport market and proving its value.

The move also aims to tackle driver shortages, ensure continuous product flow, and bolster supply chain resilience. The truck will initially operate on a single route but plans to expand to a multi-stop milkrun model. Lidl's Head of Operational Logistics, Thomas Dangelmayer, highlighted the importance of the project in ensuring product availability and reliability.
