Editors raise alarm over harassment, prosecution of journalists

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has expressed alarm over the harassment and prosecution of journalists by security agencies, warning that such actions could endanger press freedom and legitimate journalism. In a statement released following a meeting in Kano, the Guild called on the Federal Government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure equal opportunities for all political parties and candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The editors highlighted their concerns over the misuse of cybercrime legislation and other laws to restrict legitimate journalistic practices, emphasizing that press freedom is a cornerstone of democracy and good governance. The Guild urged all individuals and organizations to file complaints through the established Media Ombudsman, rather than resorting to threats or violence against journalists and media organizations.

Regarding the 2027 elections, the Guild advocated for a level playing field for all political parties and candidates, stressing the importance of lawful outdoor displays and fair treatment of campaign activities by INEC. The Guild also emphasized the necessity of fair and ethical campaigning, urging politicians and parties to avoid inflammatory rhetoric and comply with campaign rules.

They called on the media to uphold professional standards, ensuring their reports are fair, objective, accurate, and factual. Additionally, the Guild expressed concern over the poor condition of federal roads, urging the government to prioritize rehabilitation and construction efforts to improve mobility and stimulate economic activities.

The Guild praised the security agencies for their efforts in combating terrorism, banditry, and other criminal activities, while calling for sustained efforts to ensure lasting peace, security, and national unity.
