Ed Sheeran addresses backlash over Macklemore being dropped from tour

Ed Sheeran has commented on Macklemore being removed as his opening act due to the rapper's pro-Palestinian remarks during their tour. The British singer stated that the decision was made solely by the promoters, and he did not want to get involved in the public debate about the Gaza conflict. Sheeran wrote on Instagram that "Macklemore coming off tour was the promoter’s decision, it was not mine."

The tour's promoter, Messina Touring Group, has not yet responded to inquiries. Macklemore's representative also did not immediately reply. The incident occurred when Macklemore shouted "Free Palestine!" during a September 5 performance at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium while introducing his song "Hind's Hall." Macklemore argued that criticizing Israel is not the same as criticizing Jewish people or supporting genocide.

Macklemore announced on Monday that several U.S. venues had informed the promoter that they would not allow him to perform as Sheeran's opener due to his comments and a history of antisemitic rhetoric. Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, played a role in the decision as the owner of Kraft Group, which includes Gillette Stadium.

Sheeran attempted to resolve the situation by speaking with the venues but ultimately accepted the promoter's decision. The tour will proceed with Lukas Graham and Aaron Rowe as backup acts, with upcoming stops at Gillette Stadium, Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium.
