ECB Invites Merchants to Help Shape Digital Euro

The European Central Bank (ECB) has announced a pilot for a digital euro, inviting online and mobile merchants to participate, according to a press release on September 15. The pilot aims to provide merchants with a firsthand experience of a simulated digital euro ecosystem, enabling them to offer feedback that will influence the digital euro’s technical specifications.

The pilot is set to commence in the second half of 2027 and will last for 12 months, during which it will utilize a beta version of the digital euro to evaluate the technology’s functionality, operational processes, and overall user experience. The ECB emphasizes that the pilot will be conducted transparently, reflecting its commitment to a responsible and trusted introduction of the digital euro should a decision to issue it be made in the future.

The final decision on the digital euro's issuance will depend on the adoption of relevant EU legislation, with the ECB's preparations being flexible to align with the legislative process. In July, the ECB announced the selection of 36 payment service providers (PSPs) from across the euro area to participate in the pilot, with over 50 PSPs submitting applications, indicating strong market interest.

The chosen participants represent a diverse range of business models, sizes, and geographic coverage. ECB Executive Board member Piero Cipollone highlighted the strong market interest, stating that it demonstrates the private sector's readiness to actively engage and contribute to the digital euro project, aiming to enhance the European payments landscape.
