‘Disastrous’ summer showed EU must step up climate action, says Metsola

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has stated that this summer's disastrous climate conditions have highlighted the need for the European Union to enhance its climate preparation efforts. Speaking to multiple media outlets, Metsola emphasized that the issue will likely be a focal point in Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's upcoming State of the Union speech.

She noted an increased sense of urgency and the understanding that immediate action is required to cope with anticipated heat waves, wildfires, and floods. Metsola pointed out that the timing of this realization coincides with the end of a particularly devastating summer and the growing inequities faced by vulnerable populations.

She suggested that these discussions could influence the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), the bloc's long-term budget, which should be adapted to address the climate challenges. Metsola also expressed her expectation that von der Leyen's speech would cover topics of competitiveness, affordability, and security, including migration.

While she did not advocate for more aggressive emission reductions, Metsola firmly rejected the notion that climate action and economic competitiveness are mutually exclusive. Instead, she argued that recognizing the symbiotic relationship between the two could lead to more efficient and effective policies.
