Defence Ministry Partners FHA to Provide Affordable Housing for Staff

The Ministry of Defence has announced a partnership with the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCDA), the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) and various mortgage institutions to provide affordable housing options for its staff as part of an expanded welfare package. Defence Minister Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa (retired) made the announcement during a town hall meeting with the ministry's staff at its headquarters, Ship House, Abuja.

General Musa highlighted the crucial role civilian personnel play in the nation's security framework, urging staff members to stay vigilant, security-conscious and proactive in identifying and addressing potential safety risks. Concerns over land availability and affordable housing were addressed, with the minister stating that options beyond land acquisition are being explored to make home ownership more accessible to the workforce.

While waiting for the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory to return, the ministry has been working with other companies through the FHA to provide affordable homes through installment payments. General Musa encouraged staff to report suspicious activities promptly, using the slogan "See something, say something," and emphasized the importance of being aware of personal movements and activities.

The maiden town hall meeting aimed to foster direct communication between leadership and the workforce, identify operational gaps and address concerns affecting personnel. Musa expressed gratitude for the dedication of the staff, reaffirming the administration's commitment to improving welfare and working conditions for civil servants.

The minister also called for stronger civil-military cooperation within the ministry, emphasizing the importance of unity, teamwork and mutual respect between civilian employees and Armed Forces personnel.

The meeting saw the presentation of staff concerns, including delays in third-party remittance deductions, transportation challenges, access to training opportunities, promotion-related matters and outstanding entitlement arrears. The minister and his team addressed these issues and assured the staff that efforts would be made to resolve them promptly.

Director of Human Resources Mr Idris Gaya praised the minister's accessible leadership and strategic direction, vowing the staff's renewed loyalty and dedication to support the administration's goals.
