Date set for coroner’s inquest into 2020 death of Toronto woman that led to protests

TORONTO - A coroner's inquest into the death of Regis Korchinski-Paquet has been scheduled for October 13. Korchinski-Paquet, a 29-year-old woman of Ukrainian, Black and Indigenous descent, fell from a highrise balcony in May 2020 while police were present at her home. The inquest, presided over by Dr. David Cameron, is expected to last 14 days.

Ontario's police watchdog concluded Toronto police were not at fault, determining her death occurred as she attempted to move from the balcony to another. Korchinski-Paquet's death occurred in the aftermath of the George Floyd incident, intensifying protests and demands to defund police.
