Corbin Carroll hits game-winning, 2-run homer in the 9th to lift D-backs over the Marlins 8-7

In the closing moments of a key National League playoff race matchup on Monday night, Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll delivered a game-winning, two-run homer in the ninth inning, rallying the team from a late three-run deficit to secure an 8-7 victory over the Miami Marlins. The Diamondbacks' star outfielder, who had been struggling with a .214 batting average since the break, hit a spectacular splitter thrown by reliever Jack Ralston (0-1) over the right field fence, marking his 21st home run of the season.

Ralston entered the game late after Marlins closer Pete Fairbanks was pulled due to an apparent injury. Fairbanks had walked the leadoff hitter, Gabriel Moreno, and gave one pitch to Geraldo Perdomo before exiting. Ralston then struck out Perdomo on a sacrifice bunt before Carroll's decisive homer just inside the right field foul pole.

Jordan Lawlar contributed to the comeback with a two-run homer in the eighth inning off Tyler Zuber, cutting the deficit to 7-6. Marlins righty Sandy Alcantara, who had allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings, gave up the tying runs but ended the game on a high note. He retired Nolan Arenado and Tim Tawa on back-to-back strikeouts, finishing the outing with a solid performance despite giving up five runs in five innings. Alcantara leads the league with 205 innings pitched this season.

However, the Diamondbacks' starting pitcher, Corbin Burnes, faced challenges in his second start since returning from Tommy John surgery on September 8. Burnes gave up five runs over 4 2/3 innings, including back-to-back home runs by Jakob Marsee and Javier Sanoja, struggling to find his form after the injury.

As the Diamondbacks look to maintain their position in the playoff race, they send right-hander Michael Soroka (8-5, 3.53 ERA) to start against the Marlins on Tuesday night. Meanwhile, the Marlins counter with right-hander Janson Junk (6-9, 4.54) in the series, as both teams gear up for the next chapter in their competitive battle.
