Container truck crashes into vehicles on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

A 40-foot container truck experienced a mechanical failure on Tuesday morning, September 15, 2026, causing it to lose control and collide with six other vehicles on the Kara Bridge in Lagos. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) responded swiftly to the incident, with their LRT Tiger Squad arriving at the scene within minutes of receiving a distress call.

Upon arrival, emergency responders found a total of seven vehicles involved in the crash, including the 40-foot container truck with no registration number, a white Toyota Hilux, a white interstate bus, a Hyundai Odyssey, a Sienna, a Toyota Highlander, and a Mitsubishi Hilux, all with various registration numbers. The container truck's mechanical issue led to its loss of control before it collided with the other vehicles.

LASEMA immediately activated its incident management protocol and coordinated with the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and the Nigeria Police Force to manage the traffic and protect motorists. No casualties were reported in the accident, and the recovery operation was carried out in line with international best practices for emergency and traffic incident management.

Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, praised the professionalism of the agency's response team and LASTMA, as well as the police, for their quick action. He emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property through ongoing investments in emergency response infrastructure and training.

He urged motorists to maintain their vehicles regularly, follow roadworthiness regulations, and exercise caution while traveling on major highways. The public was also advised to report emergencies and traffic incidents promptly to LASEMA through its toll-free emergency lines.
