Celebrating 63 years of togetherness: East Malaysians share what it means to be Malaysian

KOTA KINABALU/KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 16 — Julia Chan and Arif Zikri spoke to people from Sabah and Sarawak about what being Malaysian means to them and how it differs from being Sabahan. Malaysia, to many, is first and foremost its delectable food and stunning sunsets. However, it also encompasses the country's rich diversity, multiple languages, and its unique identity that blends different cultures.

Sabahans, in particular, take pride in their ability to navigate different cultures seamlessly. They value the Malaysia Agreement 1963, which paved the way for Malaysia's formation, and are proud of their Sabahan roots. Malaysia also means being part of a larger family while maintaining one's individual identity. The country's strong passport, affordability compared to the standard of living, government assistance, and warm hospitality are also valued aspects of Malaysian identity.
