Brendan Valdes is back on the course after a grueling battle with cancer

Brendan Valdes, a three-time All-American golfer from Auburn University, is set to return to professional golf competition after a nine-month battle with cancer. The 23-year-old's journey began on January 1 when he was diagnosed with primary mediastinal lymphoma, a nine-centimeter tumor pressing against his heart and lung. Initially, Valdes' condition appeared to be a mild case of bronchitis, but further tests revealed the serious diagnosis.

His girlfriend, Rachel Gourley, had proposed just days before Christmas, adding to the shock and disruption of his life. Following a cold, Valdes experienced severe coughing and blood loss, leading to an emergency room visit on New Year's Day. Diagnosis of the cancer came as a devastating surprise, as Valdes had always considered himself healthy.

He underwent chemotherapy, which had a significant physical toll, causing him to gain 30 pounds and leading to a collapsed lung, pneumonia, and a hole in his lung. The ordeal forced Valdes to take an extensive break from golf, going more than six months without touching a club. Despite the challenges, his caddie and friend Tiago Barni remained supportive, promising to play against Valdes once he was healthy enough.

In June, after his final chemotherapy treatment, Valdes was declared cancer-free. The next challenge was regaining his golf skills. After playing a match with Barni in June, Valdes made his competitive tournament debut at a G-Pro Tour event in Huntsville, Alabama, where he shot 3-under 69 and finished third. Valdes is now set to compete in the Biltmore Championship Asheville as part of the Korn Ferry Tour.

This comeback is not just a victory over his cancer but a testament to his determination and resilience.
